    Help Save CubeSpace

    Dear Portland WordPress-ers:

CubeSpace needs your help now. They’re in financial emergency due in part to the actions of their unfriendly landlord, US Bank, and must raise enough funds by Wednesday the 27th to avoid eviction.

Over the years, CubeSpace has become a cornerstone of our Portland technical community. Through their generous donations of time, space, services and resources, they’ve helped make the groups you belong and the events you go to possible. CubeSpace’s support of the WordPress community was key in making WordCamp Portland happen as well as the beginning of the WordPress User Group.

Please consider making a donation so CubeSpace can keep its doors open. Consider the various free or cheap events you might have attended at CubeSpace… consider how much those events were worth, and consider if you might be able to chip in some of that value at Eva and David’s time of need.

For details on the situation and how to donate, please see http://savecubespacepdx.com/

Please spread word of this to others in our community.

    Thank you.

    Change in Leadership

I started the Portland WordPress user group to provide a monthly forum for WordPress users in Portland, and the response has been amazing. Even though we’re only a couple months into existence, a lot of people have come together around WordPress.

Recently I’ve found my time and energies spread thin amongst various projects. In order to focus on a smaller set of projects (and let the remaining projects thrive with the attention they deserve), I’m stepping back from a few things. I’m pleased to announce that Kelly Guimont is assuming the leadership role for our group. Kelly assisted with WordCamp Portland and I look forward to seeing her develop pdxwp further. I’ve turned over information on all pending pdxwp issues to Kelly, please contact her with any questions.

I’ll continue to lead the organization of WordCamp Portland (and should have some announcements about that event within a few weeks).

I look forward to remaining involved with pdxwp while I focus more of my time on other efforts.

Using WordPress MU for Communities on February 12th

Our February 12th meeting will feature Justin Kistner presenting Using WordPress MU for Communities. Justin writes:

After years of managing stand alone blog installs, I’ve graduated to managing multiple blogs from a single install of WPMu. WPMu is the multi-user form of WordPress and it’s great for managing a community. Beer and Blog is powered by WPMu and during this presentation I’ll show you what I’ve learned from using it, such as:
    • What is the difference between WP and WPMu?
    • Cool features only available from WPMu
    • Drawback to WPMu
    • How to set it up
    • Admin challenges

In addition to Justin’s presentation, we’ll have a “Genius Bar” area for folks needing help with their WordPress blogs. Chris O’Rourke indicates he’s making progress on our website; I’m hoping we can see his new design this month.

Our February meeting is on Thursday, February 12th from 6:00-7:30 at CubeSpace. RSVP on Upcoming.

Will there be any BuddyPress discussion?

    • Justin Kistner 5:08 pm on February 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Good question, Daniel. I'll talk about BuddyPress and BBPress integration.

      Hello-
Do you guys record your sessions? I teach on Thursday nights so it makes it hard to join in…..

I've put out a call on Twitter to see if someone can record the session. Hopefully we can make it happen.

I fall into this category too (or at least this week). Really stoked that there's a WP users group in Portland tho!

I too am interested in BuddyPress and establishing a community. I also have a specific question about using the Gwolle-gb guest book plug in with MU. The email functions are not working. I am looking forward to the meeting.

Enjoyed the first "real" #pdxwp session last night. Justin's presentation was great, as was the peek at Vidoop's CAPTCHA plugin. Looking forward to next month (@natronics and CSS?).

    Portland WordPress User Group: Beginnings

Tonight we held our first meeting. Attendance was around 40 people from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels that ranged from one attendee who doesn’t yet have a blog but is interested all the way up through seasoned developers. Here’s a summary of some decisions and directions that were discussed:

    • Here we are. This is our blog presence. Subscribe to the RSS Feed and keep track of what’s going on.
    • A volunteer group is designing a theme for our site. We decided to launch the site immediately so we can begin publishing content; we’ll polish up the look and feel in the next few weeks.
    • We have a Twitter account: @pdxwp – we’re still deciding how to use it, and may throw this up as an item for discussion (on another blog post here).
    • Meetings will normally be held on the third Thursday of the month, from 6:00-7:30pm, at CubeSpace. A big thanks to CubeSpace for hosting us!
    • The February meeting will be on Thursday the 12th since the normal meeting day conflicts with Ignite Portland. RSVP for the February meeting on Upcoming.
    • The user group will be a good base from which to plan WordCamp Portland 2009, date To Be Determined.
    • We discussed a variety of meeting topic ideas. Stay tuned to find out what will be featured and when.
    • The idea of a Genius Bar available at each meeting was popular, with some folks offering to share their expertise for anyone who comes with questions.

Keep an eye on this site for more information. A big thanks to all in attendance, I can’t wait to see what develops.

Congratulations! Sounds like a great start.

By the way, this theme kicks ass. What's it called?

Thanks, Aaron for spearheading this. Can't wait to see what happens next…

Despite the lack of booze, I'm excited. I just hope the people there who were new to blogging and WordPress weren't too turned off by all the policy/planning talk in this initial meeting.

Yeah, in theory that was the most boring and least WP-related meeting we'll ever have. Trust me, it'll get better.

I will mark my calendar and do my dead-level best to be there for future events. This sounds like a HELL of a gathering and I can't wait. :)

Stoked to join the next meet up! Genius Bar sounds awesome :)

      Is there a mailing list?

      • ahockley 3:34 am on January 20, 2009 Permalink | Reply

We setup a Google Group but right now I'm thinking we might not use it. Given that it's a blog-based user group, I'd advise everyone to subscribe to the feed on this blog and that will be the method for announcements and information.

        • turoczy 5:26 am on January 20, 2009 Permalink | Reply

          Great idea. Agree.

If email is a preferred delivery mechanism, though, you could enable "subscribe by email" through Feedburner or another service. Between that and Intense Debate "notify me… via email" you've got a mailing list. ;)
