Check out Brandon’s slides from Monday night.

Digital Trends Developer Blog

On Monday night at the Portland WordPress Dev Meetup I did a talk on how we scaled WordPress for Digital Trends. Click here if you’re interested in the feedback on the talk from the attendees. It ran a little longer than I intended but there was plenty of material to cover and it seemed to be well received. I promised to make the slides available after the talk so click on the link below to download the zip file.

In typical developer fashion, rather than using a presentation software solution I coded them in html using a nifty javascript library called “impress.js”. For those of you who are interested you can find their github page here. That being said the slides rely heavily on CSS3 transitions so you will need a very modern browser to view them – I recommend Google Chrome.

Two Meetups for November: Scaling Digital Trends and What’s Coming in WordPress 3.5

This coming month we have two great meetups scheduled. The first will be geared towards developers, and the second will be more for everyone. The formats will be pretty similar — presentations for the first half with mingling and general collaboration following after. Both will be held in the swanky Bancorp Tower conference room.

Oh, and did I mention? We’re looking for food and drink sponsors. If you or your company would like help foster the community in a low-cost, high-value way, we’d love to hear from you.

Scaling Digital Trends

Date & Time: Monday, November 12th at 6:30 pm

For our next WordPress PDX Developers meetup, Brandon Clark, Web Developer at Digital Trends, will discuss the challenges that his company has faced when scaling their website. In Brandon’s words:

“We’ve recently been told that is in the top 50 list of high traffic WordPress powered websites. People are often surprised to learn that our website runs WordPress and I am commonly asked how we were able to make it scale. In my talk I will share the behind the scenes story of developing the Digital Trends application, the mistakes we made, the problems we solved, and the various technology solutions we tried along the way. Custom plugins, server architectures, troubleshooting methods, and worthwhile technology partners will all be touched upon and I will happily answer questions. Perhaps sharing our experiences will help give you some ideas to grow your own WordPress site.”

What’s Coming in WordPress 3.5

Date & Time: Monday, November 26th at 6:30 pm

Winter is coming! We can see the signs already as the rain starts to fall and the cold winds blow. What better way to usher in the changing of seasons than to check out the latest and greatest enhancements to WordPress. Version 3.5 is slated for release in early December.

This month Michael Fields will be taking us through some of the improvements you will see when 3.5 hits the shelf including a brand new default theme, simplified media management, and much more.

RSVP for either or both on our Meetup page. Hope to see you there!
